What’s keeping you from joining the Sedona Westerners hiking club?

The Amblers hiking group is the introductory group in the Westerners and hikes are held every Thursday during the hiking season which is from Sept to May.  We meet up at the parking lot on Soldiers Pass in West Sedona or behind the outlet mall in the Village of Oak Creek depending on the hike location. Hikers who are Westerner members need only to show up at the meeting location with the proper hiking gear, including lug soled hiking shoes, water, usually 2 quarts or litres are sufficient, and snacks/lunch, to participate in the hike – prior notice is not required.  Our hikes range from 3 to 5 miles in length and vary from easy to moderate in difficulty.  They are paced to accommodate the capabilities of every hiker in the group and include frequent rest stops as well as stops for a snack and lunch.  I recently interviewed a few frequent Amblers hikers who commented that they enjoyed the fact the hiking was adjusted to the needs of the less experienced in the group and that the hike leader seemed genuinely concerned with their well-being.  And then of course there’s the making of new friends as well as the camaraderie, a common element in all of our hiking groups.

The 2016-2017 Amblers hiking schedule may be viewed on the Sedona Westerners website, noted below.  This website also contains useful hike information such as meeting location, meeting time, hike distance, elevation gain and other hike details.  Hikes may be cancelled because of weather without prior notice, but I generally post cancellations on the website an hour or more prior to the start time.

I welcome anyone interested in taking up hiking in the beautiful red rock country in and around Sedona to come join the Westerners and to try out the Amblers hikes.

If you are interested in joining the club, visit the Sedona Westerners at www.sedonawesterners.org or just come to one of our monthly meetings. The next one will be on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7 pm at Saint John Vianney Parish, 180 St. John Vianney Lane in Sedona.
