A New Season for the Sedona Westerners and a New Trail Boss

by Brad Bell

The Sedona Westerners welcome their new president for the 2014-2015 season Dr. Curt Kommer. Curt was born and raised in Chicago where he lived until he graduated from high school. He successfully played minor league baseball in the Midwest for 2 years until an ankle jury ended that initial career choice. Curt's dad offered up a few choices resulting in Curt's departure from Chicago to join the Air Force. As a member of the Air Force linguist division stationed in Monterey, California, he met his wife Linda who was also a member of the same division. A strong union was formed from the beginning - their love kept them together despite being assigned to separate countries around the world for a number of years. After spending four years in the military he received a scholarship from the Air Force. Following undergraduate work at the University of California, Berkley he completed Medical School at the University of California, Davis.

Following his internship and residency programs, Curt and Linda left the West Coast and returned to the Midwest where he set up a family practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He ran his practice for 20 years, was the Chief of Staff for two large hospitals and managed a healthcare program for the homeless in the greater Milwaukee area. After decades of shoveling snow, swatting mosquitos, and battling traffic, Curt and Linda saw the light and decided it was time to get out of Dodge. They followed the advice of Horace Greeley, “Go West, young man, go west and grow up with the country.” Thinking a return to California was their future they were surprised when a drive through Sedona changed everything. Like so many of us, one day in beautiful Red Rock Country changed the course of their lives. Within 72 hours they decided to put together a three year plan that would enable them to join the rest of us in paradise. In 2008, they sold their businesses, bought a home in West Sedona and made the final move in November of that year.

After a short week in nirvana, Linda and Curt left their backyard for a morning hike. Great fortune crossed their paths when they met a group of Westerners and the rest is Sedona history. Since 2008 Curt has held several leadership roles in the Sedona Westerners including Assistant Cactus Dodger 2011-2012, Cactus Dodger 2012-2013, Wagon Boss 2013-2014, and now Trail Boss for the 2014-2015 hiking season.

When asked, Curt remarked, “Why do I love being in the Sedona Westerners? Every day I get to meet and interact with an incredibly accomplished group of people who love hiking. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from – you are accepted and embraced.” The Sedona Westerners are fortunate to have this gentle, intelligent and modest man leading the charge.
